Why It Matters

In addition to the African Diaspora, the Middle Passage connected continents and led to the creation of a globalized society that directly impacts our lives. From it, the U.S. institution of chattel slavery emerged. In 1865, U.S. Congress passed the 13th Amendment, which formally ended the institution of slavery. However, the 13th included a critical caveat allowing slavery to continue in the U.S. into the 21st century.
